Skirmish Tactical ST-110 Reflex Red Dot Gun Sight
A red dot sight is a type of non-magnifying reflex (or reflector) sight for guns and other pointing devices that shows the user where to aim with a red dot that lights up. A popular design uses a red light-emitting diode (LED) at the focal point of collimating optics to make a dot-style lighted reticle that stays aligned with the weapon the sight is attached to, no matter where the eye is (almost parallax free). People think of them as easy-to-use gun sights that can be set up quickly for private target shooting, hunting, and police and military use. They are used not only on guns, but also on cameras and telescopes. They are used on cameras to take pictures of aeroplanes, birds, and other things that are far away and moving quickly. Because telescopes have a small field of view, they sometimes come with a secondary "finder scope" like a red dot sight.
With red dot sights, the target and the crosshairs are close to each other, so there is only one point of focus. This makes them easy to use and quick to put on, so the user can keep their attention on what's in front of them. They are often used in IPSC and other fast-paced shooting sports. They are also used by the military and by the cops. Both paintball and airsoft players like red dot sights for the same reasons.
Because there is no magnification, the shooter doesn't have to worry about parallax or eye comfort. Red dot sights are great for rifles with a lot of recoil because they have a long eye relief. A standard telescopic sight with a short eye relief would otherwise hit the shooter in the eye. Dot sights can be mounted at any distance from the shooter's eye without affecting focus. This means that military rifle mounts usually put the sight on the M16's carrying handle or on a rail system (usually a Picatinny rail) on top of the rifle. This makes it possible to use night vision gear along with the red dot sight.
