Snow Wolf M3A1 Full Metal Airsoft Grease Gun in Blue

The Snow Wolf M3 is based on the original M3 Grease Gun. It has a ratchet-style charging handle that acts as the fire selector/safety catch in the Airsoft version. It also has a nice electric blowback system that gives a little bit of feedback when it is fired and drowns out the familiar "clank clank clank" of an AEG muzzle report. The Snow Wolf M3 only shoots in fully automatic mode, just like the real thing, and it feels and weighs very real because it is mostly made of steel and has a gun metal grey finish. The Grease Gun is for you if you like easy, well-known films.

From the end of the 8-inch metal outer barrel back to the knurled barrel nut at the front of the receiver, the barrel is smooth and straight. The Grease Gun doesn't have a threaded barrel because the Grease Gun's real steel silencer replaces the barrel.

As a nod to realism, the barrel of the Snow Wolf Grease Gun can be removed in the same way as the real one. This is done by pulling the steel retention tab at the front of the magazine well down and away from the knurled section of the barrel and unscrewing it. We don't know of any aftermarket suppressors for the Grease Gun, but the fact that the barrel can be taken apart in a realistic way opens up choices for people who are good with tools.

At the front of the barrel, there's a weld bead that looks just like the real thing. This makes the Grease Gun look more real and hides the fact that it's not the real thing. The magazine well is right where it should be, at the bottom front of the receiver (sorry, STEN!). The magazine release is on the left side and is right under your thumb if you hold the Grease Gun by the magazine well. This makes it easy to reload, and the protective fence around the mag release makes it less likely that you'll drop the magazine by mistake.

The barrel is tubular, like almost all generation 2 submachine guns, and there are two sling bars welded to the left side of the tube. This is the perfect spot for an M1 Carbine/M3 Grease Gun replica sling, or any other two-point sling if you don't care about being accurate. The aperture iron sights of the Grease Gun are fixed and welded to the top of the barrel.

Even though the sights aren't the best, they are more than good enough for a weapon meant for close-range combat, and the same is true for Airsoft combat. The front sight is a straight blade that is not covered but is big enough to make it impossible for the sights to fall off if the gun is dropped or bumped into something. The back sight is a small hole, which is good for short to medium range and makes it easier to aim than earlier SMGs with open sights.

The fake ejection port is on the right side of the receiver tube. It has a big steel dust cover that can be opened by hand. When the dust cover is open, you can use the recesses in the mock bolt to pull it back, showing the HOP-up unit inside. The slider is like the HOP-up on an AK, which is a great concept, but the HOP-up unit on the M3 is unique to this SMG. The HOP-up rubber and nub are fully compatible with aftermarket upgrades for AEGs, which is great news for people who like to add range and accuracy improvements.

The pistol grip, steel trigger guard, and fake charging handle are all on the right side of the lower part of the receiver. Other than that, there aren't many features, except for the plate that hides the trigger mechanism in the real SMG. This AEG's charge handle does not move the fake bolt carrier. Instead, it is used to switch between safety and fire. When the charging handle is all the way to the back, the trigger is stopped and the SMG won't fire. When it is all the way to the front, the SMG will only fire in full auto. The Grease Gun doesn't have a semi-automatic mode, and the real one didn't either. To keep things easy, the real one could only fire in full auto mode.

The gun grip is part of the stamped steel body. It has a rough surface to help you hold on to the Grease Gun when your hands are wet. The trigger guard is made of cast sheet steel and has plenty of room for people who want to use it while wearing gloves. The trigger is a solid wedge shape, just like the real thing. The microswitch trigger internals give the trigger a nice feel and make a nice click when the trigger is pulled. This is a nice change from the normal AEG trigger, which has no feel. The microswitch also makes a breaking sound, improves the electrical efficiency, and gets rid of the corrosion that builds up on copper contacts over time. This should make the Snow Wolf Grease Gun last a lot longer.

At the bottom of the pistol grip is a hexagonal nut with a knurled top that lets you get to the battery section inside the pistol grip. The nut is not really a nut; it is a moving catch that looks like a nut. Pull this nut/catch back to get to the battery compartment. The baseplate will then come off, showing the mini-Tamiya battery connector inside. The space for the batteries isn't very big, but it should be able to hold small 7.4V LiPo stick batteries for M4 stocks with a PDW style and small 8.4V NiMH block batteries. In terms of depth, you have just under 11 cm to work with.

On the right side, just above the gun grip, there is a button that sticks out. This button can be pressed to make the steel sliding stock longer. When you press the button and pull the stock out, it will lock in place. Just like the real thing, the stock can be fully collapsed or fully stretched. The stock also has a steel hook welded between the stock bars. This hook is used to load the real Grease Gun mags, which were said to be hard to load by hand. This isn't very useful for Airsoft, but it's an important part of a true Grease Gun and shows the "waste not, want not" philosophy of the original SMG's design.

The Snow Wolf M3 has an unusual shape, so it has a unique gearbox shell. However, it is compatible with M4-style nozzles, version 2/3 pistons, and motors with a long shaft. The trigger is a microswitch, so you don't have to worry about regular contacts getting corroded and needing to be replaced. The HOP-up unit is also unique, but it works with normal AEG inner barrels, HOP-up rubbers, and nubs. The best thing about the Grease Gun on the inside is by far its electro-mechanical blowback system. This system spins the fake bolt with each shot, making a "clank clank clank" sound to cover up the sound of the AEG's muzzle. Even though the EBB doesn't give much impact, it does make the Grease Gun fun to shoot, especially if you're used to shooting AEGs.
