The Snow Wolf SV98 is a great replica of the SV98 sniper rifle system that is still in use by the Russian Army. It has the right barrel profile, muzzle device, and stock shape to do this unique rifle respect as an Airsoft version. This rifle is mostly based on the Russian SV-98 sniper rifle, but it uses the more ergonomic and frankly better L96 style receiver with its larger, swept-back bolt handle that allows for clearance even when using large optical sights and its easy-to-use safety catch with recessed markings that show which mode it is in.
Starting at the end of the outer barrel, we can see the SV98 muzzle device, which has a front iron sight and is accurate in the real world. The SV98 doesn't have a back iron sight, but you won't need one since this package includes a 3-9x40mm riflescope and scope rings to help you get on target right away. The muzzle device can be unscrewed, but the threads on the bottom are too big (25.2mm Diameter), and we don't know of a silencer adapter at the moment. The user handbook shows an SV98 with a suppressor attached, so hopefully Snow Wolf will make this part available at some point.
The barrel is smooth on the sides and gets narrower towards the end, just like the real SV98. The barrel is made this way to make it stronger near the receiver so it can handle high-powered cartridges and to keep the weight in the front as low as possible to make it easier to handle.
Moving on to the chassis, there is a L96-style bipod spigot at the very front, followed by a Harris bipod lug. This gives you several choices for adding a bipod to the SV98 so that it can be used in a stationary position. If you prefer an Atlas-style bipod, you can swap it out and use the spigot instead. The bipod that comes with the rifle is of the Harris style and will mount to the Harris lug.
On each side of the chassis, just above the hardware for attaching the bipod, there is a sling point that can be used with the sling bar on the stock to place a two-point rifle sling. This lets you throw the SV98 onto your back when the enemy team is coming up behind you and it's time to use your sidearm. Along the sides of the chassis, there are grooves for your fingers. This helps keep your support hand in a steady and comfy position.
On the right side of the frame, between the finger grooves, there are two protruding threaded sockets that can be used to attach the SV98's included carrying handle. This part looks like the one on the real SV-98, which is a big part of why the gun is so easy to spot. The handle is made of steel to make it stronger, and a polymer overmould keeps it from getting too cold to use in cold weather. To connect the handle, line up the threaded nuts on the handle with the holes in the stock and turn the nuts anticlockwise until they are tight enough to hold by hand. If you want to make the gun lighter, you can take off the handle by turning the nuts in a clockwise direction.
The adjustable HOP-up unit of the SV98 is on the bottom of the stock. Like the TM L96, it is an outside adjustment. The adjuster is a dial that can be turned by hand. Each small change can be heard and felt, so you can quickly make changes in the middle of a game. This type of HOP-up works the same way as a "TDC" HOP-up, which is known to be a great way to adjust because you can make changes right on top of the HOP-up rubber, which minimises side-to-side movement.
The magazine well of the SV98 is just in front of the trigger guard. This is a reasonable place for it because this rifle uses the TM L96/M40 style of loading mechanism. The magazine's shell is made to look like it has reinforcement grooves. It can hold 65 BBs, which can be loaded through the front fill/feed port or by hand with a normal Airsoft speed loader. The magazine catch is right behind the magazine. It looks like a paddle and can be used by both right-handed and left-handed users.
When we get to the SV98's receiver, we can see that it is a more advanced version of the L96 style, with a bigger bolt handle and a textured safety button. The real L96 and SV98 both have receivers with angular surfaces and a 20mm Picatinny top rail for mounting optical sights, so unless the Russian fans at your local spot are very, very careful, they may not be able to tell the difference.
The safety catch is on the right side of the back part of the bolt, just behind the bolt handle. It is easy to reach from the shooting grip with little movement, which could draw the attention of an enemy sniper. This important feature can be used no matter what the weather is like because the surface of this control has a deep, linear texture. Also, the safety is much bigger than the one on a VSR-10 platform, which makes it easier to use with gloves. The safety settings are shown by recessed markings. "S" stands for "safe" and "F" stands for "dangerous."
The SV98 has a larger L96-style bolt handle that is pulled back so that larger optical sights can be used on the rifle without getting in the way of how the bolt moves. This also makes it easy to grab the handle and move it quickly when you need to. The receiver, upper barrel, and bolt handle are all made of a strong alloy. This gives the SV98 the name "full metal" and makes it a great choice for players who want a realistic gun.
The Snow Wolf SV98 stock is very similar to the real SV98 stock and is fully adjustable. It has a cheekpiece that can be raised and a rubberized buttplate that can be raised and lowered to get the best shooting position. This stock gives you all the choices and adjustments you need to set up the rifle for static defence, and even though it's big, it's not too heavy, so it's also good for a player who likes to move around.
You can change the height of the buttplate by removing the knurled nut on the right side. This lets you raise or lower the buttplate to fit your position, body type, and loadout. Unscrewing the adjustment screws under the cheek rest lets you raise or lower it. There is also a sling bar inside the stock. It is right behind the screws that set the cheekpiece. This can be used with either of the front sling points to make a two-point sling mounting option that can be used with either hand.
The last thing about the SV98 that we need to talk about is the monopod that is built into the stock. The monopod is meant to be used with a bipod to help set up the gun on uneven ground and give a little more clearance when needed. By loosening the knurled nut on the right side of the stock, just above the monopod, the monopod can be stretched. Once the monopod is where you want it, you can tighten the locking nut to keep it in place.
So, the Snow Wolf SV98 is a great choice for people who want a sniper rifle that looks a little different from the rest and has some really useful features that you don't often see on an Airsoft sniper rifle at this price point.
