The Chiappa Rhino 50DS CO2 Airsoft Revolver is about as far removed from the traditional six-shooter as you can get while still keeping a cylinder in the middle. Officially licensed by Chiappa, this distinctive revolver recreates the unconventional 5-inch Rhino design with a full metal body and barrel, silver finish and contrasting imitation wood grip panels. Product code 440.084, this version combines the unmistakable low-barrel profile of the Rhino with realistic shell loading, CO2 power and properly reproduced markings. It is an airsoft pistol with plenty of visual presence, but look beyond the styling and there is an impressive amount of functional detail here too.

Starting at the business end, the Rhino's defining feature is its unusually low barrel position. The real Chiappa design fires from the bottom chamber of the cylinder rather than lining the barrel up with the top chamber as you would expect on a conventional wheel gun. That layout was developed on the firearm to lower the bore axis, and while recoil management isn't exactly keeping airsofters awake at night, reproducing the arrangement is important to the character of the replica. Inside is a 127mm inner barrel with a 6.08mm bore, while underneath the outer barrel sits a five-slot Picatinny accessory rail measuring approximately 50mm. That gives you space for a suitably compact light or other compatible rail-mounted accessory.

The sighting arrangement is equally well thought out. Fibre optic sights make the sight picture quick to pick up, while the rear sight can be adjusted for both windage and elevation. That becomes particularly useful when combined with the adjustable hop-up system. Rather than giving you a simple fixed hop, the Rhino features nine adjustment positions, allowing the amount of backspin applied to the 6mm BB to be fine-tuned. A dedicated hop adjustment key is supplied in the box. For an airsoft revolver, where fixed hop systems are hardly unusual, having this level of adjustment gives you much more control when setting the pistol up for your preferred ammunition and shooting distance.

Move back to the centre of the airsoft gun and you reach one of the most enjoyable parts of the Rhino: its six-shot rotary metal cylinder. Six individual metal cartridges are supplied, with each shell carrying a single 6mm airsoft BB. Open the cylinder, load your six cartridges and close it up, and the whole process has that deliberate mechanical feel which makes shell-loading revolvers so satisfying. Capacity is obviously limited compared with a conventional magazine-fed airsoft pistol, but that's rather missing the point. The Rhino is about making those six shots part of the experience. Reloading involves actually interacting with the replica rather than simply slapping another magazine into the grip.

The fire controls continue that theme. The Rhino can be operated in both single and double action, so you can manually cock the mechanism before each carefully aimed shot or use the longer double-action trigger pull when you want to shoot more quickly. The active safety flag is another particularly neat detail. When the mechanism is cocked for single-action shooting, the indicator rises to show its status, reproducing an unusual feature of the original Rhino. The barrel lock system has also been represented rather than being replaced by a generic revolver release. Add the official RHINO 50DS .357 MAGNUM trademarks and Chiappa branding, and there's a level of authenticity here that should appeal to collectors as much as regular airsoft players.

The full metal frame and barrel give the Rhino a very different feel from lightweight polymer sidearms. There's proper substance when you pick it up, with the metallic construction helping the controls, cylinder and shell-loading system feel appropriately mechanical. The silver exterior makes those angular lines particularly noticeable, while imitation wood grip panels provide a surprisingly traditional contrast against all that futuristic geometry. It's a combination that shouldn't really work, yet somehow does. Think Italian sci-fi prop meets classic revolver and you're somewhere in the right postcode.

Those grip panels conceal the power source, with the Rhino running from a standard 12g CO2 capsule. A particularly useful touch is the integrated CO2 tightening tool hidden within the grip, so installing a fresh capsule doesn't require hunting around your kit bag for a separate tool. Under suitable conditions, efficiency can reach approximately 100 shots from a capsule, although real-world shot count will naturally vary according to temperature, firing speed, capsule quality and the condition of the seals. CO2 gives the Rhino the crisp response you'd expect from a gas-powered airsoft pistol while keeping the external design free from a conventional magazine or visible gas reservoir.

What makes the Chiappa Rhino 50DS interesting is that its unusual appearance isn't being used to disguise a basic revolver underneath. You get a nine-position adjustable hop-up, adjustable rear sight, fibre optic sighting system, lower Picatinny rail, realistic six-shell cylinder and both single and double-action operation. The full metal construction and licensed markings then add the tactile and visual details that matter when you're buying a replica because you genuinely like the platform. It won't give you the ammunition capacity of a modern semi-automatic sidearm, but that's not what this airsoft revolver is trying to do.

For skirmishers, the Rhino offers something refreshingly different to carry as a secondary airsoft gun, particularly if you enjoy making individual shots count. For target shooters, the adjustable hop and sights give you useful options for dialling in the setup. And for collectors, the combination of official licensing, full metal construction, shell-loading operation and that unmistakable silver 50DS profile gives it plenty to appreciate even before a CO2 capsule goes anywhere near the grip.
