S&T - Nambu Type 100/40 Submachine Gun AEG with Folding Bipod in Real Wood (STAEG116BRW)

If your WWII airsoft collection already has its fair share of MP40s, Thompsons and STENs, the S&T Nambu Type 100/40 offers something considerably less common. Based on the distinctive Japanese Type 100 submachine gun, this full metal and real wood airsoft rifle recreates a weapon closely associated with the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War. S&T has retained the unusual profile of the original, including its side-loading magazine, ventilated heat shield, folding bipod and bayonet lug. The result is an airsoft gun that looks immediately at home in a historical collection but has modern AEG internals underneath the period exterior.

Starting at the front, the Type 100/40 has a metal barrel assembly surrounded by its characteristic ventilated heat shield. It is one of those details that gives the Nambu its instantly recognisable silhouette, especially when combined with the folding bipod mounted beneath the front end. The bipod can be deployed when wanted or folded back against the rifle to keep everything tidier when moving around a skirmish site. S&T has also included the authentic-style bayonet lug, an unusual feature on a submachine gun but an important part of getting the Type 100's appearance right.

Moving rearwards brings you to the full metal receiver and perhaps the Type 100's most obvious talking point: the side-mounted magazine. Rather than feeding vertically from underneath like most WWII submachine guns, the magazine enters from the side of the receiver. It gives the S&T replica a wonderfully unconventional profile and stays faithful to the layout of the original weapon. The controls are ambidextrous, while the adjustable tangent-style rear sight adds another period detail without interfering with the practical handling of the airsoft rifle.

The genuine hardwood one-piece stock provides a very different feel from the polymer furniture found on most modern AEGs. Its natural grain and traditional finish complement the metalwork nicely, and because it is real wood, small variations in colour and grain should be expected from one example to another. More importantly for skirmishing, the substantial stock provides a stable shoulder position and also serves a practical purpose by concealing the battery. The Type 100 uses a Mini-Tamiya battery connector, with a 7.4V LiPo being the recommended power source.

Internally, S&T has given this historical replica a reinforced alloy gearbox rather than treating it purely as a wall-hanger. Inside sits an 18:1 reinforced steel gear set running on steel bushings, paired with a factory-fitted high torque short-shaft motor. That combination provides a sensible foundation for regular AEG use while retaining the wonderfully old-school exterior. A quick-change spring system is also fitted, making spring replacement and power adjustment considerably more convenient than on gearboxes that require a more involved strip-down.

Accuracy and consistency are helped by a 6.03mm tightbore inner barrel fitted as standard. The tighter bore is designed to provide a consistent path for the BB and works alongside an adjustable rotary hop-up unit, allowing the backspin to be tuned for your chosen BB weight. Hop adjustment is accessed through the mock ejection-port area by operating the charging handle, keeping the adjustment system hidden away rather than spoiling the historical lines of the gun. It's a neat blend of vintage styling and the sort of adjustment you'd expect from a modern skirmishable AEG.

What really gives the S&T Nambu Type 100/40 its appeal is how convincingly it combines those two worlds. From the real wood stock and metal receiver to the heat shield, folding bipod and oddball side-loading magazine, there is plenty here for WWII collectors and reenactors to appreciate. Underneath, however, you still have useful features such as a rotary hop, tightbore barrel, high torque motor, steel gears and quick-change spring system. For anyone putting together an Imperial Japanese Army loadout, expanding a Second World War airsoft collection, or simply wanting an airsoft gun that isn't another familiar European or American design, the Type 100/40 is a genuinely distinctive choice.

The Type 100 has also found a new audience through its appearances in games such as Call of Duty: WWII, so you don't necessarily need to be a dedicated military-history enthusiast to recognise it. In the hand, its combination of timber, metalwork and unusual mechanical layout gives it character that is difficult to replicate with a conventional modern platform. It is certainly different, and that's precisely the point. If you want a WWII AEG that looks interesting on display but still contains practical modern airsoft internals for use on the field, the S&T Nambu Type 100/40 fills a very unusual niche.
